Brain injury

How a tumor, and its treatment, are affecting thinking.

Brain tumors and the treatments used for them can affect memory, language, attention, and emotional functioning in ways that are not obvious in ordinary conversation.

Why an evaluation

The question this answers

Brain tumors, and treatments such as surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy, can affect thinking, memory, language, attention, and emotional functioning. These effects are often not visible in everyday interactions, which is precisely why they go unaddressed.

A neuropsychological evaluation provides a comprehensive, objective assessment of how the tumor and its treatment are affecting cognitive functioning.

What testing examines

The domains examined

Carefully standardized tests examine multiple areas of cognitive ability. The resulting pattern of strengths and weaknesses carries information about how brain functioning is being affected, and complements the findings of neurological examination and brain imaging rather than duplicating them.

  • Memory and new learning
  • Attention and concentration
  • Processing speed
  • Executive functioning
  • Language and word finding
  • Visuospatial skills

Who it is for

Who is referred

Referrals come from neuro-oncologists, neurosurgeons, neurologists, and rehabilitation teams — before treatment to establish a baseline, during treatment to understand its cognitive effects, and afterwards to describe functioning and support planning.

What you receive

What the evaluation gives you

A written report that treatment teams can use: a description of current cognitive functioning, how it compares with any earlier testing, and recommendations bearing on work, daily activities, and the supports that help maintain independence and quality of life.

Because the results are documented and standardized, repeat testing shows genuine change over time rather than a difference in impression between two visits.

Neuropsychological Associates provides assessment and consultation only. The practice does not provide counseling, psychotherapy, cognitive rehabilitation, neurologic consultation, or psychiatric assessment. Recommendations in the report are carried out by your own physicians and treating providers.
